Sara Pauwels built a stable around her horses’ needs

A South Carolina barn with a clear purpose

It is a peaceful setting in the marshlands of South Carolina: Sara Pauwels lives with her horses, goats, chickens and cats on a small farm near Charleston. A trained and qualified veterinary technician, she spent many years working in emergency and small animal medicine. Yet her true passion has always belonged to horses. “I’m not a trainer or a big competitor,” she says. “I simply want my horses to feel well – both physically and mentally.”

A Lifelong Dream on Solid Ground

In 2022, Sara and her family purchased a property that included an ageing wooden barn – functional, but no longer suited for the future she had in mind. That was the moment she began developing her own stable concept.
“I wanted to create an environment here, in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, that combines safety, functionality and comfort. For the horses, but also for myself.” Working closely with her architect, she developed detailed plans. Röwer & Rüb supported the process, advising on how to make the barn not only safe, but practical and efficient for everyday use.

A barn designed for the climate

In a region defined by humid summers and the constant threat of storms, the design had to respond to local conditions. High ceilings, generous openings and effective airflow were essential. A robust drainage system and solid construction ensure long-term durability. Inside, the layout is clear and structured. Rubber pavers in the aisle provide secure footing and make daily work easier on both horses and humans.
For the heart of the barn – the stalls – Sara selected a combination of seven “Bremen” fronts and one “Hannover” front to accommodate special situations requiring additional security. Curved partitions allow horses to see one another while still offering retreat when needed. A flexible partition enables two stalls to be combined into one larger space, ensuring adaptability as needs evolve.
“It was important to me that the horses can see each other. They are herd animals – that gives them security.”

At the same time, Sara paid close attention to the finer details. “The latches, the materials, the proportions – everything feels high-quality, clear and logical. I don’t like half-finished solutions.” The bamboo planks in elegant Midnight Black create a striking visual impression, complemented by galvanised steel elements that give the barn its refined overall character.

Trust as the foundation

The personal support throughout the project was particularly meaningful to Sara. “The Röwer & Rüb team took the time to discuss every decision with me. That built real trust.”
When questions arose regarding shipping logistics and transport costs to the United States, the German company provided reliable information and practical solutions. “Shipping products to the U.S. can be challenging. Through transparent communication, I felt very well supported,” she explains. “The team found a solution that was reliable and came without additional costs.”

Today, the barn stands completed. Soon, the horses will move in. “I’m looking forward to finally using the barn – every day, in real life.” And when she imagines that moment, she already sees it clearly: “When I walk down the stable aisle and see those doors – in that dark shade, with those clean lines – I know it was the right decision.”
