At the picturesque Hofgut Albführen, agricultural tradition and modern horse management come together in a unique overall concept. Röwer & Rüb has been involved in the ongoing development of the facility since the 1990s. The latest challenge was the renovation of a historic stable block dating from the 1970s.
Anyone driving up the avenue from Dettighofen in Baden-Württemberg towards Hofgut Albführen will sense, even in the final few metres, that this place is more than just an equestrian centre. The view opens out onto a vast plateau, framed by miles of white fences, sweeping pastures and a harmonious blend of historic and contemporary buildings. Albführen combines fine dining, stylish accommodation and professional horse management under one roof, yet it has remained to this day what it always was – a real farm.
Much of what the more than 100 horses on Albführen need on a daily basis is produced on the farm itself. Hay, straw and oats are grown on the farm’s own land, and energy is supplied by a wood chip heating system fuelled by wood from the farm’s own woodland. This integrated value chain reflects a commitment that runs throughout the facility; knowing that quality is one’s own responsibility from start to finish. The focus is always on the individual horses.
Experience gained at Albführen shows that an approach which focuses on the horses and their individual well-being creates a basis for long-term sporting success. The many victories and international placings achieved by horses born, reared and trained at the facility prove the team led by Managing Director Sebastian Ströbel are right. Some outstanding dressage and show jumping horses were bred at Albführen or trained here. Added to this is the collaboration with Steve Guerdat, which has already produced several of the Olympic champion’s renowned successful horses.
This approach is also reflected in the architectural decisions. As Ströbel notes, Röwer & Rüb has been a long-standing partner and preferred supplier to Albführen since the early 1990s. “When the formerly agricultural business was restructured and systematically upgraded, Röwer & Rüb was involved right from the start,” he comments. “This partnership is still ongoing today, and is underpinned by a shared understanding of quality and reliability.”
The complex features stall fronts from the Hannover and Verden ranges, as well as loose box doors, tilt-and-turn windows and a striking green entrance with white bars leading to the indoor riding arena. Spacious stalls, plenty of light and fresh air, windows for an unobstructed view and daily exercise are the hallmarks of the facility. Röwer & Rüb’s solutions fit seamlessly into the overall concept.
A striking example of this close collaboration is a bespoke sliding barn door with a windbreak net. “Instead of a traditional glass front, we came up with a solution that improves the stable environment all year round and ensures a continuous, draught-free supply of fresh air even during the winter months – a noticeable benefit, particularly for the stud stallions housed there,” reports Ströbel. This solution was developed in collaboration with Flurin Cadalbert, a long-standing contact at Röwer & Rüb who has been supporting and advising the Hofgut Albführen estate for many years – a “true professional”, as Ströbel attests.
This partnership is also evident in large-scale in-house projects. In 2023 a stable block dating from the 1970s underwent a complete refurbishment whilst it was still fully occupied by horses. The precise measurement of the bespoke doors and partition screens, coordination with other trades as well as on-time installation was handled by a single provider. This structured approach proved to be crucial, particularly in the sensitive environment of an operational farm. Sebastian Ströbel was full of praise: “I was really impressed by this approach.”
Today the Röwer & Rüb products are in daily use at Albführen – unobtrusive, functional and reliable. This quality is precisely what impresses those responsible. It is not showy but rather something that makes everyday life run smoothly. “It is no coincidence that our partnership has existed from the very beginning and continues to this day,” says Ströbel.
